For many holiday makers, Fuengirola is all they see of Spain – the English pubs, German bars and Scandinavian restaurants; each catering for their loyal northern European customers. Not much of an insight into the "real Spain". Or is it?
This week I met a friend in the town for Tapas – as it was a good halfway point between Marbella where I live and Malaga where he lives. As I waited in the main square, just as the sun was going down, I was struck by just how Spanish this holiday resort still is! Every bench was crowded with locals, out to chat and enjoy the warm evening. 
Children played in the fountain, a blessing was being held in the church, elderly people sat and watched the world go by.
So even in Fuengirola you can discover a flavour of the "real Spain".

I used to live in Fuengirola for some time; if one just look inbetween the buildings with the restaurants they’ll be amazed by the lives taking place their. If one finds their way up to Mijas, or even just a 5 minuits drive from the centrum towards el campo, they’ll find the old man with one tooth and his hat of straw walking his horses while the construction trucks thunders by.
