Artisan ceramics and tiles in Seville – ‘Populart’

Close to Seville’s ancient cathedral, in the narrow streets of the barrio de Santa Cruz, are hidden some of the city’s best secrets – bars that time seems to have forgotten; palaces with hidden patio courtyards dating back to the Islamic era; – and interesting independent shops!

Populart.. (‘artesania, antiqua ceramica, alfareria, hierros, bordados, grabados y cacharreria’).

‘Populart’ is one of these quaint shops and is well worth a visit, with its superb collection of vintage, antique and modern tiles and pottery. The Aladdin’s cave of Andalusian artisan treasures is owned by Laura Salcines, whose friendly and knowledgeable approach brings the history of the pieces alive. There are all manner of rustic pots, bowls and dishes dating back a century or more, as well as tiles salvaged from various buildings across the region that are hundreds of years old.

The owner also has an exceptional prvate collection of world class pieces.

I purchased a beautiful tile from the 17th century – it’s now on display in my home.

With a history of over 800 years of Islamic rule there is a strong artisan legacy of working in ceramics in the region, with amazing pottery and tiles. Seville was one of the cities at the heart of this artistic trade and itrems available for purchase range from intricately decorated traditional kitchen and diningware to large, simply decorated, deep ceramic bowls used to catch the decapitated heads of slaughtered animals!

I lived across the street from Laura’s wonderful Populart for over 16 years. It is indeed a special place.

Is there a webshop of this shop? Or if not, maybe simply a website or blog…?
I passed this store on a trip to Sevilla but didn’t had to chance to really visit it but I really adore this store!!

I visited Populart several times at the end of November and was very impressed! Sancho gave a lot of his time discussing the items, the store, the history of the Barrio–I can’t wait for their website to get up & running. Good luck to them, I’ll be back!
