With the immense snow capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada, the area of the Alpujarras is all about natural water. Of course, there is the subtle, fresh taste of the local Lanjaron, but there are also a number of iron rich waters with very distinctive tastes!
Fuente Agria, near Portugos has to be amongst the most interesting. Close the small chapel is a municipal fountain, where the 5 key types of spring water are piped out, from the iron to fizzy, it’s a like a menu of mountain water.
Walk further down and you discover a hollow, with a natural cascade and walls of ferns and other moisture loving plants – it s hard to think it is June in Southern Spain , as it is so fresh and green up in the sierra.
