Finally after a decade of planning and some eight years of construction, today saw the first phase of Malaga’s shiny new, air-conditioned Metro system opened to the public. Two lines are open and 17 of the initial stations – and I was there to share in this moment of local history!
The network was opened by the Minister of Development, the President of the Junta de Andalucia and the Mayor of Malaga.
The service was free today and plenty of locals and visitors took advantage of the opportunity to test drive the system – things worked smoothly, but the glass ticket gates were operating too slowly and queues were building up, so I hope the engineers can make them open and close faster.
This is the latest in a major tranche of infrastructure investments that show Spain’s confidence in Malaga as a city of significant future growth. New projects have included the high speed AVE railway line to Madrid; a second runway and second terminal at Malaga Costa del Sol Airport; new motorway around the city and north to Antequera; new port quayside…and the list goes on…
