Today is Dia de la Hispanidad (Columbus Day), a National Holiday, commemorating the discovery of the New World by Christopher Colombus. It’s also celebrated across Latin America.
Basically it meant a lie-in today for me!
A bit like 1066 in the UK, the date Cristóbal Colón/Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas is a date that every Spanish person knows – 1492. However, these things are surrounded by mystery and debate and many academics and amateurs alike have strong opinions on the subject. Theat doesn’t stop Spain spending a small fortune or a huge parade today in Madrid with fly-passes, military parades etc.
