Andalucia Diary – Seasonal Travel Notes

Andrew Forbes Luxury Al Andalus Train 2

A Spanish land cruise aboard a vintage Royal Train

Last week I was invited to take a train trip to the Royal city of Aranjuez, near Madrid. Yet this was no ordinary rail journey; it was board the prestigious Al Andalus train (once the Royal Train for the British Monarchy, used in France).

This was a special day, with fine dining, to launch the 2015 season of RENFE’s luxury trains, offering land cruises in exceptional style through some of Spain’s most iconic regions. The Al Andalus is usually based in Andalucia and offers a route that takes in the some of the best sights of the region.

The lunch was excellent – lobster salad, then roast duck; the quality of the on-board dining has definitely improved. Together with the Transcantabrico, the Al Andalus offer vintage style with modern amenities.

A few years ago I took the Al Andalus on its unforgettable itinerary through Andalucia blockbuster sights (see article here and blog posts here).

I have also enjoyed the Transcantabrico along Spain’s north coast to the ancient city of Santiago de Competela (see article here).

Travelling these trains has never been more accessible, with special 3 night/4 day itineraries available.
