Hiking in Sierra de las Nieves

Recently I’ve started using Wikiloc for hiking routes in Andalucia. It’s really excellent for planning a day in the mountains – members share their routes and tips. There are plenty of hikes through the Sierra de las Nieves, so if you in the area or are planning a trip, then I recommend you take a look.

Today was stunning – but we had to take care with the abundance of processionary moth caterpillars!

Beautiful day, so instead of relaxing in the sun, we decided to climb a mountain! (Carrying a heavy rucksack 😅 laden with our picnic, coffee & cake!). The forests in the Sierra de las Nieves are really infested with the pine processionary larvae. Winter nests are pretty much everywhere and the caterpillars are sadly killing some of the trees. (Keep clear of these bugs, as the hairs on the caterpillars are irritants – powerful enough to cause serious harm to pets and can cause allergies in humans). That aside the caterpillars are fascinating to watch marching along, head-to-toe. Hopefully when the Sierra becomes a national park the govt will do more work on natural controls. . . . #hiking #sierradelasnieves #sierra #bosque #sendero #senderismo #trekking #walking #nature #mountains #mountainhigh #instahike #instanature #instagood #fit #wintersunshine #andalucia #andaluciadiary #spain #naturaleza #winter
