Herd Of Wild Goats Sierra De Las Nieves

Iberian Ibex in the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park – what you can see on an early morning hike

I escaped for an early morning walk before sitting down to my laptop and work for the rest of the day.

I headed towards Yunquera, and went up into the mountains and by luck, as I walked a trail I stumbled across a herd of young Iberian Ibex; Spanish wild goats gracing and scratching around in the dry and rocky landscape.

The view was stunning. As I walked closer, twigs breaking and cracking under my boots, the more mature females in the group gave out clear whistle-like calls and the young group quickly and agilely jumped and skipped to higher ground.

A wonderful way to start the day!

It’s not the first time I have seen Ibex in this area. Take the A-366 road, direction Ronda in the Sierra de La Nieves Natural Park, and before Yunquera, at km 39 there is a turning on the right. Take this track, past the disused marble quarry and there the hike starts.
